Mark Howells-Mead, also known on the internet as “Permanent Tourist”, is a British photographer who has been living in the Bernese Oberland for several years. He has been taking photographs since he was at school, and has amassed a large archive of photo-graphs from across Europe.

One of Mark’s main passions is people photography and he will be showing a series of his pictures from the past fifteen years entitled “Others” at the English Speaking Club in Bern on Thursday, March 12th. Entry is free and all are welcome to hear Mark tell the stories behind some of his favourite pictures: from the bearded Californian professor to the man dressed as a teletubby on lake Thun.

You can get a taste for Mark’s photography on his web-site, at permanenttourist.ch.

First of all, let’s look back at the last two months:

Gurten-Chris prepared his delicious Curry for us… needless to say that we enjoyed this culinary evening very much. Special thanks for this valuable contribution – which turned out to be a donation as well.

Another event took us by surprise: Isabel – a long standing member – celebrated her birthday, not only with us, but with all her friends at the club. Thanks to our good stock we were able to cater for the party with beer and snacks. There’s a rumor abroad that the barkeeper ended up dizzy because of handing out such a great amount of drinks.

By the way: Do you know that as a member you can rent the club for private use? If you plan an event our club location might be the right spot for you! Do not hesitate to contact us if you need further information. We would love to hear from you.

And here is an outlook on the next two months:

As announced in the last newsletter, we present a brand new event at the club: On Thursday, March 12th the British photo-grapher Mark Howells-Mead will be our guest and present an interesting and inspiring slideshow of his photographs. I promise: His pictures are spectacular and show motifs liter-ally from a different angle.

Get a first impression on www.permanenttourist.ch. You find detailed information as usual on the second page of this sheet.

Graham Tritt takes time to hold his bar talks again and Stefan Bogdanov organizes the very popular sing together with the International Club of Bern. It’s a pleasure for us to host them!

Last but not least: Sunday April 26th the English Club will attend church. It is not meant to take a stand for a specific religion but to celebrate spirituality together. People from a diversity of religions are welcome to join Markus Ruf (more information see next page).

Hope to see you soon again!

On behalf of the committee,

Corinne Oegerli

ESCB President

Singing is good for the soul! Enjoy a couple of hours of vocalizing with friends accompanied by Stefan Bogdanov on guitar. Stefan provides the lyrics of some old pop favorites and everyone sings along. It’s easy and it’s fun! This is also a nonsmoking event to keep those vocal cords fine tuned! Drop in anytime, it’s free!
