Important: There only is a limited number of tickets availabe (fifteen). So please sign up as early as you can. You need a ticket if you want to attend, it’s possible to buy one till the Friday before the movie night (in case they won’t be sold out by that day).

Should you be prevented for any reason you can cancel the latest 24 hours prior the event. Afterwards we can not refund the tickets due to expences we have ourselves.

The price for Premium members is 10 Francs, Basic members or guest pay 15 Francs. Included are two glasses of red wine, cheese and bread. Other drinks are available at a reasonable price from the bar.

This summer has been a rather rainy one. Maybe that is why you showed up at our meeting point, the ESCB club bar, in such numbers. We therefore can look back on two positive summer months and want to express our gratitude to you, our great members and friends!

Mentioning the weather: Our annual BBQ – organised by Leon – was held and it was a warm, nice and sunny day! Someone must have made sacrifices to please the weather gods. Maybe it was Barbara as the president of the organisation who looks after this nice spot. Many thanks to her – also for offering this opportunity to the ESCB.

The first event for the next two months will be Misha’s famous movie night. The film ‘That Obscure Object of Desire’ was choosen after a doodle poll. Important to know is that you have to buy a ticket at the bar. Please check page two for more details. Our committee members have even more up their sleeves for you: Frido is the organiser of our popular event the ‘Oktoberfest’ (there might even be some women turning up in Dirndls). And Nik and Terhi are in charge of the second pumpking carving, as it was such a lot of fun last year. More information on these events on the second page and you will receive an email prior to these events (as usual).

Hopefully you will find time to attend one or the other event at the club. Or just drop in on a Thursday or Friday, we open at eight in the evening and are there for you.

As last year, the hard core will go to the infamous ‘Bümplizer Chilbi’ afterwards. All which is required there is to still be somewhat of fit at 10:00 pm.

That Obscure Object of Desire

Adapted from Pierre Louys’ 1898 novel ‘Le Femme et le Pantin’, this is Bunuel’s final film. Recounted in flashback to a group of railway travellers, the story wryly details the romantic perils of Mathieu (Bunuel favourite Fernando Rey), a wealthy middle-aged French sophisticate who falls desperately in love with his 19-year-old former chambermaid Conchita (played by both Carole Bouquet and Ángela Molina). Thus begins a surreal game of sexual cat-and-mouse, with Mathieu obsessively attempting to win the girl’s affections as she manipulates his carnal desires, each vying to gain absolute control of the other. Brimming with the subversive wit which characterises Bunuel’s finest work, THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE takes satiric aim at a decadent, decaying society riddled with political unrest and moral bankruptcy. Nominated for two Academy Awards, it is an apt summation of the director’s obsession with the connection between sex and violence and a fitting epitaph to a remarkable career.

Time flies; again two interesting months lie behind us:

Apart from the ‘normal’ bar nights, we had two events: Hilde organised the incredible Belgian Beer night and Misha the Games night. Thanks a lot to Hilde and Misha and certainly to you for participating!

Undoubtedly, we hope for a very good summer! Especially since we are going to organise the famous BBQ (hosted by Leon and Barbara) in August! More about hat on the second page of our newsletter.

Later on, we will hold a movie night again: Misha has chosen several films and you can vote for your favourite till the end of July (only one will be shown). Participants then should sign up and buy their ticket beforehand. We will limit the places to fifteen as the facilities of the club are limited too. Also we will provide you with wine, cheese and bread. Come and enjoy, last but not least the good company!

And most importantly: Approximately in July we will release membership cards again. You will receive an email what day you can get yours at the club (all people the same day; yes, it is going to be a party). We are happy that it finally worked out; also because it is a requirement we have to meet by law. We do have additional administration but the main point is to keep this club kicking…

The end of August is equal to the ESCB’s business year again. So we will send out the invitation for the AGM by the beginning of September and our auditors will be invided to check the books again. Thanks in advance!

Newsletter July and August 2010

Misha is going to prepare this for you and will enjoy your company and participation.

For this event no fee will be charged, you pay what you drink. The stock is limited, first come first served. So be early and grab yourself a beer or two!

First of all the usual review of the last two months, March and April: Our friends from ‘Are You Serious?!’ performed at the club. Not only numeros English Speaking Club of Bern members showed up, but also a lot of fans of the group. Thank you very much to the troup. For sure we are going to have them over again the second half of this year.

Later on, Terhi held a very successful Ester Hunt. Lovely to see how quick teams were formed and how eagerly they were fighting for the victory. Thank to Terhi for takeing that upon herself and to make it a success.

Not a lot more to say about the Cocktails Night by Terhi and Nik! Except that it broke all the records and the crowd really enjoyed themselves with various drinks.

And – not on the offical club programme – the ‘American Women’s Club of Bern’ organised a games night in our premises. Special thanks to them and particularly to Shawn!

Enough from the past, below the future events:

There will be another Belgian Beer Night (see reverse side)! Hilde is going to make sure that we can drink one or more of these special beers. The stock is limited – first come, first serve.

Before he World Chamionship starts, Misha will hold a Games Night at the club. No, we won’t play football. But other interesting games (details page two as usual).

During the World Championship in June/July we will be providing a football free zone. Should you ever feel tired of all the grass and men’s calves then come to the club.
